This morning we learned compound verbs, interjections, reviewed compound subject nouns and classified two sentences. We worked on our Root Word packet, namely the root: capt, capit - head, chief, leader. Students drew what they meant and finished the sheet. We will be having a test on these words on Tuesday, 17th December. We worked some more on impromptu haiku poems. Mrs. Kirsch and I split the class for reading. The focus was fluency and accuracy, pausing at commas and breathing at periods and dashes, to speed up our comprehension. Students took turns making up comprehension questions that represented lower-level and higher-level thinking. STUDENTS SHOULD BE READING AT LEAST 30 MINUTES EACH DAY IN THEIR BOOK CLUB BOOKS. PLEASE SEND THEM TO SCHOOL WITH THEM SO WE CAN DISCUSS SPECIFIC PARTS.
In math we began our Geometry unit. We learned acute, obtuse, right angles. We learned how to make an accurate right angle with a scrap piece of paper. We tested whether objects have right angles or not. We also learned that right angles are 90 degrees, two right angles is a straight line of 180 degrees, three are 270 degrees, etc. We pushed the concept to three whole circles, adding the degrees... We learned the terms point, ray, line, angle, protractor, degrees, etc. TODAY'S HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE 1 AND TO DRAW A SIMPLE PICTURE USING JUST STRAIGHT LINES. WE WILL BE MEASURING THE ANGLES TOMORROW.
History was a synopsis of our explorers, touching base with our biographies. We also worked on our puppets. Vitus Bering is a wonderful puppet and gave students the motivation to work on theirs. Please remind your child to empty his cubby every day. There are important notices to go home.
