It's great to be back again!
We started off sharing our adventures of Spring Break. Morning message was corrected, and the status of our Writing Rally stories determined.

This morning we reviewed self- and peer-editing expectations. Students also classified sentences and worked on punctuation and capitalization rules.
During reading, students worked on their book reports. THE FIRST TYPED COPY OF THE BOOK REPORT #2 IS DUE MONDAY.
READ 30 MINUTES TONIGHT.
MATH HOMEWORK IS PAGES 117 AND 118 AND 1/2 OF THE GRAPH.
This afternoon we had lots of time to finish typing, printing, and practicing speeches. EVERY STUDENT SHOULD BE FINISHED WRITING THEIR SPEECH. THEY WERE DUE YESTERDAY. Monday,10 March 2014 - Country Speech Project for this Thursday and Friday
This morning we created a grammar bulletin board to help us become more familiar with prepositions and helping verbs. Students continued writing stories, in anticipation for Writing Rally later this week.
Students are working hard on their Book Report #2. A little every day counts for a lot! CONTINUE READING 30 MINUTES EVERY DAY.

Today was a heavy writing day. Students are becoming very familiar with structured writing. Encourage them to give more details in their supporting sentences. Tomorrow we are looking forward to playing "Sparkle" in spelling.
Math introduced the concept of letters being numbers. Students are bonding 9 = l + w and 3 + n = 7, etc. Tomorrow we will use concrete objects to manipulate algebraic multiplication: q = 4 x shoes, etc.
In history we learned about different cultures that have contributed to Utah. We talked about the language difficulties and health code standards that are different for immigrants. We pulled deductions from photographs. Students then researched more on their countries.

This morning we flip-flopped Writer's Workshop with Writing Mechanics (grammar, paragraphs, root words, etc.) and still got to finish a chapter in Seven Alone. John and his brood have made it to Fort Boise.
Mrs. Kirsch checked off books for reading and students had time to read, take notes, and make progress on Book Report #2. PLEASE HAVE YOUR CHILD READ THE EXPECTED NUMBER OF PAGES TO COMPLETE THE BOOK BY THE 9TH OF MARCH. Students calculated the number of pages they had to read each night. Please hold them to it and encourage them.
MATH HOMEWORK IS TWO-FOLD: TESSELLATION CUT OUT AND WORK ON REVIEW #8. The review is not due until Friday, as is the whole chapter. We will have a test on Friday.
Foreign Language and Art for the 4th Graders, research for the 5th Graders followed lunch. 5th Graders are wrapping up "I wonder..." projects. Some are doing power points, others writing skits and making posters.
We were rewarded for the Jazz Readathon effort by having a visit from:

We plotted deadlines for each paragraph, discussed costume, food, etc. STUDENTS SHOULD BE RESEARCHING THEIR COUNTRIES EVERY NIGHT FOR SPECIFIC INFORMATION. They should choose 3-4 areas to specialize in. Examples are: animals/plants/landscape/language/culture/dance/masks/religion/music/transportation/industry/agriculture/
history/famous people/tourism/sports/mountains/olympics/etc. We would like these to be written by the 15th, so students may plan and perform their speeches before I leave to New Zealand.
I will be gone from the 21st March - 12 April.

This morning we wrote in our journals, reviewed root words, started a new persuasive paragraph, and began to read the last chapters of Seven Alone. Mrs. Kirsch reviewed Book Report expectations with the class. Please regularly check the deadlines, so your child is on target with completing the report on time. READ FOR 30 MINUTES, OR UNTIL THE TARGET GOAL IN YOUR READING BOOK HAS BEEN REACHED.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE 7. Tomorrow we begin the Review and an art project related to tessellations. We will be working hard reviewing concepts from 4A and 4B courses before we attempt the next test.
After lunch students went to Drama, Music, and then Student Development, where we organized our desks, folders, and reviewed homework policies. We set a new goal to be proactive with assignments and review daily what expectations are.
PE followed with Science at the end of the day. We learned about muscles (smooth, skeletal, and cardiac muscles) and tied body building in with our learning. Students were stunned that small regular movements in muscles create such definition. We learned about voluntary and involuntary muscles. Next class we will be learning what happens at the cellular level.

This morning students studied Root Words with each other. We then took the Root Word Test, completed envelopes, finished grammar sheets and handed them in, and completed the spelling code activity. John Sager and his siblings snuck out of camp and are waiting for the other travelers to get ahead of them by a day before they head north on the Oregon Trail. John is becoming like a father to his siblings.

MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 14, 15, AND 16. We learned how to divide decimals today. The steps are:

For Cultural Roundtable students listened to well-prepared presentations about a variety of French speaking countries. The posters were visually appealing and full of information. I hope they get hung up in the school.
We learned about specific parts of pioneer life today as we started on our mobiles. These will take a few days to create. We also learned about the telegraph and how the Pony Express shut down when the telegraph went up. Students got to make their own telegraphs! Students can look up videos about the telegraph on youtube.

This morning we visited with each other after a very busy weekend. The energy level was very high!
We wrote in our journals, worked on the last grammar lesson in this unit (will begin punctuation soon!) and cut out spelling words. In Seven Alone John Sager and his siblings have just reached Fort Hall, where some members of the trapping companies are trying to persuade the travelers to go to California instead of Oregon.
STUDENTS SHOULD READ AS MUCH AS THEY CAN EACH NIGHT. TURN OFF THE T.V. AND ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES FOR AN HOUR AND JUST READ, READ, READ!
MATH HOMEWORK WAS TO WORK THROUGH EXERCISE 5. We learned that when you do such operations as addition and subtraction, the most important thing to do is to line the decimals up. Students picked up on the fact that 2.3 - 1.879 requires us to stick two extra zeroes on the 2.3. I was impressed with how fast students worked! OTHER HOMEWORK IS TO DO MATH TEST CORRECTIONS AND GET A PARENT SIGNATURE.
After Drama and Music, we learned about communication throughout history and decorated envelopes for notes to go in for the Valentine's season. Students even cleaned out their desks!!!
P.E and Science ended the day. Hemo, the Magnificent, helped us understand the cardiovascular system better. SCIENCE HOMEWORK IS TO FILL IN THE WORKSHEET MS. HOWELL HANDED OUT ABOUT THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM. IT IS DUE WEDNESDAY.

This morning we worked grammar, the root word "vac" meaning empty, movement machines, and read more from Seven Alone.
Mrs. Kirsch was at school today. TOMORROW STUDENTS MUST BRING THEIR READING BOOKS AGAIN AND KEEP WORKING ON THEIR BOOK REPORTS.
MATH IS THE FIRST THREE PAGES OF THE REVIEW. Those with their reviews done and corrected tomorrow will get to use the ipads and computers for enrichment activities. Today we learned how to round to the first decimal point and whole numbers.
This afternoon we were busy with Writer's Workshop. Students may take writing home to type on our class drive. We also learned about countries where pioneers emigrated from and saw how many people came to Utah by handcart or wagon in its first ten years. Students had time to work on their projects.
After music and P.E. we had a fun science lesson watching "Nemo, the Magnificent", a movie about the cardiovascular system. We learned so much. We will finish the movie in a later class.

This morning we completed grammar, 3-point essays, Writer's Workshop stories, and spelling. This class is writing so well! They are choosing topics and writing creatively within a certain structure. The boys particularly are working hard in "clubs" of creative writing.
READ! READ! READ! THIS WEEKEND!!! SEE IF YOU CAN GET FOUR + HOURS OF READING DONE AND SIGNED OFF. THERE WILL BE REWARDS ON MONDAY FOR THOSE WHO TURN IN THEIR SIGNED PAGES.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 9, 10, and 11. It is super important that the kids realize that 1.0 is the same number as 1, 3.02 is the same number as 3.020, and .6 is the same number as .60 or .600. It will help them to make sure that the mixed decimals have exactly the same number of place values given after the decimal when they are comparing the two.
We learned about the climate, geography, and animals of Brazil today in Cultural Roundtable. We also played a fun game called "Ring, Ring, Who has the Ring?"
Companies passed off a slew of tasks today when we rolled for our trails. Songs were sung; posters were shared; These kids are rocking at working together. They are finishing up the last tasks before we plan our all-school pioneer activity.
How lucky we were to have a visit from Dr. McGuire today! She spun real blood for us and showed how blood counts help her know what is wrong with an animal. MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 9, 10, and 11. It is super important that the kids realize that 1.0 is the same number as 1, 3.02 is the same number as 3.020, and .6 is the same number as .60 or .600. It will help them to make sure that the mixed decimals have exactly the same number of place values given after the decimal when they are comparing the two.
We learned about the climate, geography, and animals of Brazil today in Cultural Roundtable. We also played a fun game called "Ring, Ring, Who has the Ring?"
Companies passed off a slew of tasks today when we rolled for our trails. Songs were sung; posters were shared; These kids are rocking at working together. They are finishing up the last tasks before we plan our all-school pioneer activity.

This afternoon we had Foreign Language and Fifth Graders went to Art. Fourth Graders wrote letters to the First Graders and worked on Writer's Workshop.
Minicourses were successful, and I had an especially fun time teaching about Dry Ice.

In Math we whizzed through decimals. Tomorrow we will put the brakes on as we attack deeper decimal processes. HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 6,7,8.

This morning's riddle: What word becomes shorter by adding two letters? Answer: "short"
We wrote in journals, finished our grammar (learning object pronouns), wrote a movement description, and cut out new spelling words. A lot done! Reading was S.I.R. Make sure those book reports are getting done.
READING HOMEWORK: 60-70 MINUTES AND BRING IN YOUR SIGNED READING LOGS.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISES 1-4. Parents, we are starting an extensive decimal unit. If you pay allowances or talk about money for the next little while, please refer to "two tenths of a dollar" rather than twenty cents, "three dollars and 5 tenths" rather than $3.50, and "thirty-five hundredths" rather than thirty-five cents. It is very difficult for students to realize that 0.4 is the same as 0.40. We are working on this concept.
After lunch, the whole school synergized and moved the gym floor about 10 feet! Wow! We had foreign language, art/writing, technology, karate/dance, and then for history, we watched a movie about pioneer explorers. In writing, the fifth graders are researching a topic of their choice. They are writing what they know, writing questions about what they want to know, and writing what they find out, so they can present their information using their favorite multiple intelligence. I am impressed with the wide variety of questions being posed. Next Tuesday the fifth graders will go to the Orem Library for further research opportunities.
I just LOVE this class. They are working so hard on their History unit. I LOVE how the company leaders are so concerned about helping the others in their groups. It is fun to direct the learning and watch them teach each other. That is one thing I LOVE about this school!

All I want to do is read Seven Alone! What about you?
We started off with a quick review of subject/verb tense sense, move on to the root word "macro", meaning large, and enjoyed read aloud for a little while. Poor John Sager sure got duped by that Indian! It's a good thing Kit Carson came along when he did, or he wouldn't be able to show his face!

Our Jazz Read-a-thon has just begun again. Students should be reading at least 60 minutes each day through the 18th of February. We will be having activities, rewards, and competitions to motivate kids from this end. Please encourage your students to read. Read to them at night. read to them over meals, read to them as a family. AND COUNT AND RECORD THE MINUTES!
NO MATH HOMEWORK TODAY. We collected math books, which I will review and record this weekend. Students took a test today. We will start a new book on Tuesday.
In history we learned about why the Mormons moved from Independence back to Nauvoo, about mobs and mob tactics, about tolerance. We also noticed that the Salt Lake Valley wasn't so much a desert as it just needed to be irrigated. Students worked together to research and get to their destinations.
We are making cards for the 7th and 8th Graders to enjoy after their hard work on the Wax Museum. Also, for the 6th Grade Student Leaders.
If students would like to make a card for our janitor, that is also fine.

This morning we played a word game, where students had to deduct the pattern. The last letter of the word becomes the first letter of the next word. We finished our grammar sheet and learned the root word, "Pop" means "people". Students then resorted their spelling words for the last time before their test tomorrow.
STUDENTS SHOULD READ 30 MINUTES TONIGHT AND TYPE OUT ANY 3-POINT PARAGRAPHS, HOW-TO'S OR OTHER STORIES THEY ARE WORKING ON.
MATH IS PAGE 175 (THE FIRST PAGE OF THE EXERCISE). We drew out large rectangles and small rectangles of different colors, cut the smaller ones out, and taped them over the big shapes. We then figured out how much area was not covered. We will be learning this again tomorrow, reviewing it on Thursday, and doing the math test on Friday.
After lunch and foreign language, the 4th Graders went to art and the 5th Graders started Wonder pages, researching interesting facts to start their Type III projects.
Instead of Technology, we worked on writing assignments. Students then went to Karate, Yoga, and Dance.
How impressed I am with this history class. We have three company captains, who are trying to get their wagon trains to their end destinations. They roll the dice and then get to work. One group was lucky enough to get a good chance card today! Student projects are going up on various bulletin boards.

This morning we wrote journal entries, worked on root words, and started new 3-point paragraphs. We are reading aloud Seven Alone, a journey of children on the Oregon Trail. Mrs. Kirsch read The Great Brain with the class. BE SURE TO READ FOR 30 MINUTES EACH NIGHT FROM A BOOK OF YOUR CHOICE. THERE WILL BE A BOOK REPORT DUE SOON.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE 4. The last problem is particularly tricky. We learned to "slide" edges of composite shapes to complete rectangles. We used yarn to do this. On the last problem, students must remember to include the parts of the perimeter that don't slide. IN ADDITION TO HOMEWORK, STUDENTS SHOULD COMPLETE 1-2 LESSONS ON XTRAMATH.COM DAILY.

In History we used photos as a primary resource to see how covered wagons and handcarts are different. We also compared the numbers used in migration. Students rolled the dice and posted work done. I am impressed with how well captains are using the 7 Habits in their leading.
After music and P.E. we took a pre-test of the 11 body systems and learned the function of the Respiratory System. We learned about the trachea and capacity of our lungs. Balloons were blown up to represent the capacity of air our lungs inhale.

This morning we sorted our spelling and did a logic activity adding the values of the words. Students then worked on grammar and writing a 3-point paragraph. We are reviewing the structured writing process again to get into the swing of it. Topics were chosen from this list: How to be unpopular; Three people I would like to meet; Three things I have learned in History; and Favorite movies.
We have an "I got caught..." card to help students transition faster. A sticker and my initials x 10 = $1 at the lunch store. Students are trying to "get caught" doing good things.
All but two students have self-selected an independent reading book. ALL STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A BOOK SELECTED AND BRING IT TO SCHOOL DAILY. These books are to be read this month in anticipation of a book report. In class we are reading The Great Brain. This is purposely going at a slower rate to improve the reading comprehension and strategic methods children use to interpret text.
MATH HOMEWORK IS PAGE 171. Today we used bar models, formulas, and string and tiles to find area and perimeter. We are slowing the concept down a little to ensure 100% mastery. Please drill your child on the formulas:
Area = Length x Width
Perimeter = (Length + Width) x 2
Students had Foreign Language and either Art (5th) or Science (4th). Thereafter it was Competition Choir or Team Sports.

A great big welcome to our new students!!
This morning in Language Arts we questioned each other about the vacation and then wrote about it for a timed 10 minutes. Grammar was a slick review. It took us a while to get our brains warmed up! The newest concepts of conjunction and interjection are coming along.
IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT STUDENTS READ FOR 30 MINUTES EACH DAY OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL. STUDENTS SHOULD COME TO READING CLASS WITH A BOOK OF THEIR CHOICE. We will be starting the book The Great Brain, by John D. Fitzgerald. It is important that students read for understanding. There are lots of new vocabulary words and so much humor in the story snippets of this book. They will love it.
MATH HOMEWORK IS EXERCISE #1 AND A HAND TRACING ON GRID PAPER TO FIND AREA OF RECTANGLES AND SQUARES. Today we shared three or four different ways to find area. Students used real mosaic tiles to create shapes and determine their area. Please remind your student that area is written in square units! Please encourage your child to estimate the area of the carpet, the yard, the bedroom floor, the kitchen table, etc.
For History, we watched a five minute video on the pioneers. We then brainstormed everything we know about them and wrote several questions. We searched for main ideas, dates, events, and people as we began the chapter of "Moving to Zion". Students will be divided into trail teams tomorrow. They will be completing assignments to get them to their various destinations: Oregon, California, and Utah. They will be working on multiple intelligence and bloom's activities about settling Utah during the next 3-4 weeks.
Fifth Graders brainstormed many "How-to" ideas and began organizing one into step-by-step instructions. This is a fun activity, as the students must be very exact about how a skill is learned or performed. They will have two weeks to complete, edit, and publish their works. Thereafter, we will have "Live" performances of the skill.
Great day. Transitions are difficult at best. MAKE SURE YOUR KIDS GET TO BED EARLY-ISH! ALSO, PLEASE SEND A COUPLE OF MORE SNACKS WITH THEM, IN CASE THEY GET HUNGRY IN THE EARLY AFTERNOONS.
