This morning we created an Arches Sudoku, using letters instead of numbers.  Students worked on the cursive "L", a partner grammar activity, and learned how to self-edit and peer-edit their written work.  We then moved on to Writer's Workshop and reading. STUDENTS SHOULD BE READY FOR BOOK CLUBS ON MONDAY.  SAME ROLE AS LAST MONDAY.

Math was fun.  We worked on order of operations.  It is important that you know the expressions run from left to right.  Whenever an equation is solved in the expression, the solver goes back to the beginning and moves again from the beginning, left to right.  If, for example, the expression looked like this:

3 x 3 - 45 / (4+1)

We first do what is in the parentheses: 4 + 1 = 5

We go back to the beginning of the expression, which now looks like this:

3 x 3 - 45 / 5

Now we move from left to right again, starting at the beginning, and we look for x or /, whichever comes first in our left to right direction:

3 x 3 = 9

Now our expression looks like this:

9 - 45 / 5

Now we move from left to right again, starting at the beginning, and we look for x or /, whichever comes first in our left to right direction:

45 / 5 = 9

Now our expression looks like this:

9 - 9

Now we move from left to right again, starting at the beginning, and we look for x or /, whichever comes first in our left to right direction.  Since there are no more x or /, we look for + or -, whichever comes first in our left to right direction.

9 - 9 = 0

Our answer is 0

After drama and music, we reviewed DNM animals and learned how contour maps operate.  We had a recess and read aloud a book about how Dinosaur National Monument got started.

Students then went to science.
